Latest Magazine Illustration

This one was done for Colleague magazine, illustrating a story about women in leadership roles in education. It was drawn out in pencil first, then digitally taken into Illustrator.

Rock #1

As of late, I've found myself shooting more and more photography. Up until now, this blog has featured primarily oil paintings, then both paintings and illustrations, and now I'll be expanding that to include photography. This was shot near Venice Beach, California. -G

Baby Pod Sketch

Well, it's been a bit longer than I like to go without posting...so I decided to post one of my sketches. It illustrates the Illustration Friday topic "BABY" from a couple weeks back. The baby in utero is visible to the outside world through a window, similar to a submarine window, or a space bubble on an astronaut's head. Keeping with the space theme, baby and mother stand outside a baby pod--an incubator of sorts that is a cute abode and a birthing station that doubles as a rocket. This image was inspired by the birth of beautiful baby Olive Radford!

Coming up next: I have a few projects in the works currently...a couple magazine illustrations, and a painting that will be the start of a new series I'm working on that will feature abstracted far away locations.

Crown of Seeds

"Crown of Seeds" was created for Illustration Friday to illustrate the concept SEED. This organic crown formed of twigs and seeds has grown on the spot into a tightly structured headpiece that shapes and molds hair into a sculptural form. How tightly it constrains the hair's movement is evident in the spillage that bursts out of the last unrestrained corner.

Weisman Art Exhibit, Reception Today

My art is up in the Weisman museum, and there have been a steady stream of visitors thus far! Today is the artist reception, and I just came across the press release for the exhibit:

------------------------------------------------
New Exhibit Opens at the Weisman Museum

Portfolio of Creative Work, a new exhibit featuring drawings, paintings, and photography from members of the Pepperdine Public Affairs team, will be on display at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art Wednesday, Apr. 30, through Friday, May 2.

The Pepperdine community and general public are invited to meet the artists at a reception on Thursday, May 1, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Gregg G. Juarez Palm Courtyard adjacent to the museum.

The exhibit showcases works of art from 10 members of the Public Affairs team. Featured artists include Maz Ameli, graphic designer; Jerry Derloshon, director of Public Relations and News; Rick Gibson, associate vice president for public affairs; Allen Haren, multimedia producer/broadcast engineer; Lyric Hassler, senior public relations advisor; Keith Lungwitz, senior art director; Matthew Midura, executive director of University Communications; Brett Sizemore, director of Creative Services; Gayle Wheatley, art director; and Vincent Way, manager of Editorial Services.

“The featured works in this exhibit range from rich photography to rendered illustration to engaging canvases, demonstrating a wide range of artistic prowess among the Public Affairs team,” Sizemore said. “We are very proud to have this opportunity to exhibit in such a prestigious venue as the Weisman.”

The Weisman Museum, located on the University’s Malibu campus, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed on Mondays and major holidays. There is no admission charge. For more information on this show and upcoming exhibits, please call (310) 506-4851 or visit the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art Web site.

Saving Mermaids from Drowning

This illustration was inspired by Illustration Friday’s topic: Save.
In the drawing, a mermaid shops at the upscale “Sea Bubble Boutique” for a land hat to wear out of water. Each “Sea Bubble” is filled with salt water, and accessorized with various sea creatures. I modeled some of the fish and critters after marine life I’ve seen while scuba diving. This illustration was a blast to do!

Pet Peeves, served with Sushi

I know this is a little late, but I finally got it done!

An illustration about Pet Peeves, for illustration Friday. This is one of my biggest pet peeves--people droning on and on without a care if the listener is bored! Media: Colored Pencil & Pen on Paper

(text reads: "And the story droned on and on and on all around her, for quite a significant amount of time. But thankfully all was quiet in the tiny space around her head. And in this space she could think, and dream, and wait out the blizzard of endless babble disguised in the form of words and sentences, forming truly mindless chatter.")
